About Blue Alliance Marine Protected Areas
Blue Alliance Marine Protected Areas currently manages 60 Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) across four MPA networks in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Zanzibar. With plans to extend our management to 200 MPAs in six MPA networks by 2030, our goal is to protect 2,000,000 hectares of coral reef biodiversity, safeguard over 70 threatened marine species, and significantly improve the livelihoods of more than 50,000 coastal community members.
Our innovative model not only focuses on ecological conservation but also ensures the economic empowerment of local communities through long-term income generation from reef-positive businesses in ecotourism, community-based aquaculture, sustainable fisheries, and blue carbon. These efforts are supported by the Blue Finance Facility for Marine Protected Areas – a groundbreaking vehicle to regenerate marine biodiversity and develop the Blue Economy in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia.
Role and Responsibilities
We are seeking a motivated and organized Hatchery Manager Assistant to support the daily operations of an aquaculture hatchery located in Pemba, Zanzibar. The hatchery focuses on microalgae culture, larval rearing, and nursery culture up to the juvenile stage. The ideal candidate will have a degree in marine science, strong communication skills in Swahili and English, and at least three years of professional experience, with management experience preferred.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Support
- Assist in the daily operations of microalgae production, larval rearing, and nursery systems.
- Monitor water quality, feeding, health, and growth of cultured organisms.
- Operate and maintain hatchery systems and equipment.
- Follow and support the implementation of standard open rational procedures related to technical activities.
- Support the Hatchery Manager in overseeing staff activities.
- Help coordinate work schedules and task assignments.
- Participate in staff training and team coordination.
- Ensure adherence to safety and operational procedures.
- Record daily production and environmental data.
- Maintain organized records (physical and digital).
- Assist in the preparation of internal technical reports and progress summaries.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in marine science or related field.
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience, ideally in a technical or scientific role.
- Prior management or team leadership experience preferred.
- Fluency in both Swahili and English (spoken and written).
- Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to work flexible hours and in a practical, hands-on environment.
