Data Analyst
Job title: Data Analyst
Location: Zanzibar (ZAMEP office)
Reporting to: Team lead - MEZA Project
Duration: One year (renewable)

Introduction
The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss-TPH) has been assigned by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations through Population Health International (PSI) to implement a project to accelerate the elimination of local malaria transmission in Zanzibar. The MEZA project (Accelerating Malaria Elimination in Zanzibar) is a comprehensive intervention aiming to speed up the goal of zero malaria transmission in the islands. The campaign includes four separate initiatives.

The first initiative, MAlaria eLImination in ZAnzibar (MALIZA - Swahili for finish it), intends to create an enabling environment for managing the elimination efforts. MALIZA is a cross cutting initiative that include integrated health and non-health sector actions at national, district and community level. The second initiative, Managing Pemba Elimination of MAlaria (MAPEMA – Swahili for soon), intends to achieve malaria elimination in Pemba and satellite islands in a short period of time through intensified multisectoral actions towards blocking local transmission and mitigating the importation of new cases.

The third initiative, ELImination of Malaria in Unguja (ELIMU - Swahili for education), aims to achieve malaria elimination in Unguja and satellite islands in a relatively longer time period through a two-steps concerted actions to initially mitigate urban and seasonal transmission and later stopping local transmission and controlling importation of new cases. A last initiative Joint TAnzania mainland & ZAnzibar MAlaria (TAZAMA – Swahili for lookup) aims to address the source management of imported malaria cases and to contribute to bring to an end malaria re-introduction.

Position summary:
The Data analyst will play a critical role in supporting the MEZA project by managing, analysing, and interpreting data to support malaria surveillance and assess the progress and effectiveness of malaria elimination activities. The data analyst will  ensure that all data-related aspects of the MEZA project are handled with the highest level of accuracy and integrity, contributing to informed decision-making and the Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Strategic Plan V 2024-2029.

Key responsibilities:
1. Data management:
o Oversee the collection, cleaning, and organization of data from multiple sources for surveillance, monitoring and evaluation, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
o Design and maintain databases for project-related data, ensuring secure storage and easy retrieval.
o Develop and implement data quality assurance protocols to ensure the integrity of the datasets.

2. Data analysis and interpretation:
o Perform statistical analyses to evaluate the effectiveness of MEZA malaria elimination interventions.
o Generate insights from data to support decision-making and the Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Strategic Plan V 2024-2029.
o Create visualizations, dashboards, and reports to effectively communicate data trends and findings to stakeholders.

3. Support for research and reporting:
o Assist in the preparation of project reports, including data summaries, statistical outputs, and evidence-based recommendations.
o Scientific contribution to the preparation of manuscripts, presentations, and other dissemination materials to share findings with the broader scientific and public health community.
o Collaborate with the epidemiologist, other MEZA team members to design and execute the MEZA implementation activities.

4. Field monitoring and support:
o Collaborate with field teams (at districts and community level) in Unguja and Pemba to monitor and improve data collection processes.
o Conduct periodic field visits to ensure the quality and reliability of collected data.

5. Capacity building:
o Train and mentor field staff and other project team members at the Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Programme (ZAMEP) on data collection, processes, and quality assurance techniques.
o Provide guidance on statistical methods and data interpretation to support MEZA project objectives.

6. Stakeholder collaboration:
o Work closely with the ZAMEP, MEZA project partners, and other stakeholders to align data-related activities with project goals.
o Ensure timely and accurate sharing of data and insights with relevant stakeholders.

7. Innovation and problem solving:
o Stay updated with advancements in data analytics and statistical methods, integrating innovative approaches into the project.
o Identify challenges in data management or analysis and develop actionable solutions to address them.

8. Other duties:
o The candidate can be requested by the MEZA Team Leader to perform other public health-related duties, in line with the candidate’s competences.

Qualifications and requirements:
• Education: Master’s or PhD in biostatistics, statistics, or a related field.
• Experience:
o At least 5 years of experience in data management and analysis,
preferably in malaria, public health or related projects.
o Demonstrated expertise in managing and analysing large datasets.

• Skills:

o Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., R, Stata, or SPSS) and data
visualization tools (e.g., Tableau).
o Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret
complex data and present clear findings.
o Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
o Effective communication skills to convey technical information to
diverse audiences.
o Familiarity with GIS tools and spatial analysis.
o Fluency in writing and speaking both in English and in Swahili.
