The FRESH Project
As part of CGIAR’s Research Portfolio, the Fruit and Vegetables for Sustainable Healthy Diets (FRESH) Initiative is working with partners to address the challenges that contribute to poor diets. The FRESH project uses an end-to-end approach starting from consumers and working back through the food system to increase fruit and vegetable intake for multiple impacts. WorldVeg supports different work packages under FRESH.
This advert is related to Work Package 4 – postharvest and inclusive markets with funding from Wageningen University & Research, The Netherlands and the Australian Horticultural Research. WorldVeg is piloting technologies for food safety improvement and postharvest loss reduction such as evaporative coolers, plastic crates, paper-lined wooden crates and cool boxes through a demand-led and co-creative approach. The aim is to assess the effectiveness of these technologies and design a scaling strategy. The target users are middle stream actors including vegetable collectors, wholesalers and retailers operating in Arusha and Kilimanjaro regions.
FRESH WP4 is looking for an intern to provide support to the piloting of a plastic crate business model for postharvest loss reduction along the vegetable value chain.

This is a competitive Internship Position with a contract beginning as soon as possible until end of December 2024. The intern will work fulltime from WorldVeg’s office in Arusha with frequent travels to the project sites in Arusha and Kilimanjaro regions. The position is open for Tanzanian nationals. A competitive monthly stipend will be offered for the period of work.

- To design a proposal on piloting the plastic crate business model and implement the pilot with various value chain actors.
- To assess the effectiveness of the plastic crates in postharvest loss reduction and the strengths and weakness of the plastic crate business model.
- To collect data, analyse and write a report on the effectiveness of the plastic crates; and strengths and weakness of the plastic crate business model.
- To support the designing of a scaling strategy for the best performing postharvest technology.

Requirements
- Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics / Food Safety / Agribusiness Management, or any other related discipline.
- Good understanding of postharvest loss assessment in agricultural value chains in developing countries.
- Strong knowledge and experience in designing and implementation of postharvest loss interventions along agricultural value chains.
- Excellent quantitative and qualitative data collection skills.
- Proficient in data analysis using STATA.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative, and multicultural environment, and operate under tight deadlines.
