JOB ADVERTISEMENT1. BACKGROUND
The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) is a Parastatal Organization established by an Act of Parliament No. 23 of 1979 (CAP.59, R.E.2002) and became operational in 1980. NIMR-Mwanza Research Centre is one of the NIMR Centers located in Mwanza region. The Centre is currently conducting research on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as well as other diseases of public health importance.
The National Institute for Medical Research is looking for the qualified, experienced and well-motivated personnel to fill various positions into different projects at NIMR Mwanza Centre....
2. CLIMATCH STUDY
The Institute is collaborating with Rigshospitalet (Danish National Hospital) and Tanzania Meteorological Agency and other partners to conduct a study investigating the long-term effects of climate change on non-communicable diseases (CLIMATCH Study). The Institute is inviting applications from motivated and suitably qualified Tanzanian candidates to fill the following positions.
PhD FELLOW - CLIMATE CHANGE AND HEALTH TRACK (1 POSTS)
JOB POSITION: PhD FELLOW - CLIMATE CHANGE AND HEALTH TRACK (1 POSTS)
The PhD fellow is expected to write a PhD study proposal and submit thesis within 36 months of PhD registration at any reputable local University. The selected candidate will be expected to write PhD proposal in the area related to the main study which may include an investigation of the effects of climate change on non- communicable diseases or other related chronic conditions.
REPORTING: The post holder will report to the Project Principal Investigator
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
i. To assist in coordination of implementation of the CLIMATCH study as a deputy coordinator. This will include;
a. Preparation of ethics applications, standard operating procedures and field recruitment plans;
b. Recruitment of study participants and data collection in the field;
c. To represent the study in national and international platforms;
ii. To undertake a PhD project on the subject related to the main funded project and submit thesis within 36 months; and
iii. To perform any other job-related duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.
QUALIFICATION AND COMPETENCE:
i. Holder of Master’s degree in Meteorology, climatology, statistics, mathematical modeling, data science, physics or related field;
ii. Experience of writing and publishing scientific work;
iii. The candidate must have published at least one paper emanating from the Master’s degree work or other scientific work or has produced equivalent scientific output;
iv. Demonstrate experience is managing complex databases;
v. Obtained master’s degree within the last 5 years;
vi. The candidate must have analyzed climate data previously; and
vii. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

One (1) year contract which may be renewed on annually based on performance and mutual agreement.
DUTY STATION:
The successful candidate will be based at NIMR Mwanza Centre and regularly visits at study sites.
COMPENSATION:
A competitive salary will be offered to the successful candidate as per project budget.
