About the project

The Realizing Potential for ASGM Trade (FVO) is a 4-years project being implemented by 1 international organization – Solidaridad and 2 international companies Aunexum and Impact Facility in Geita, Tanzania. The project is primarily focused on creating access to geological data for ASM gold mines, through ‘translating’ mining cadastre information and the availability of (basic) technology for soil analysis. Geological data is crucial for ASM gold mines for example to aid dig shafts and tunnels in the right places and right directions, to make a reliable estimate of the lifespan of the mine and the quality and quantity of the gold deposits. This is important to work more efficiently, to prevent environmental damage and have access to formal finance.

Project’s objectives:

In this project we aim to develop an approach and tools that ASM can use to ‘read’ the mining cadastre data and perform basic soil analysis of their mining concessions. In addition to this, we will work on the introduction of mercury-free technology and build an access to market model that puts emphasis on strong supply chain traceability and due diligence (ICGLR and OECD) requirements.

The Position:

Reporting to the Country Manager the Geologist will be based in Geita and will be responsible for data and information gathering from both primary and secondary sources. Secondary sources would comprise relevant project documents, commodity sector reports, and Government reports. Primary data will be collected from sampled beneficiaries and market actors in all the project sites. The detailed methodology and field work schedule will be worked out in collaboration with Solidaridad gold Project team, partner organizations and the consultants during inception meeting. However, the Geologist will hold interactions with, Program Manager, M&E & Communication Unit and the core team to be acquainted with project, its activities and the proposed work.He/She will prepare a detailed methodology including questionnaires and checklist for focus group discussion and key informant interview as per the project document and project log‐frame.*

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Structure consultation program (baseline assessment) with the artisanal mines to identify needs for geological data as well as current methodologies and information used
  • Develop concept format geo-data assessment (needs/ current practices)
  • Review the final concept format of Geo-data
  • Integrate the geo-data concept format and other formats into one baseline assessment format
  • The baseline geo-data assessment with the 10 ASGM mines
  • Assessment of the possibilities to make existing appropriate geological information accessible for ASM
  • Develop stakeholder consultation plan on current availability of Geo data
  • Implement consultation plan that has been developed (government institutions and private sector etc)
  • Data Analysis and feasibility of making existing data available/ useful for ASM
  • Make an inventory of tools/ equipment available for mine-accurate geo data with associated implementation costs 1) DIY methodologies, 2) semi-professional 3) professional techniques
  • Provide technical support to ASGM miners and to the Solidaridad gold team.
