Mentor/Producer-Presenter Tanzania
Job Title: Mentor/Producer-Presenter
Reports to: Senior Trainer Mentor
Location: Tanzania. The post holder will be required to spend at least 80% of their time in the field, working with radio producers at partner stations throughout Tanzania.
Special requirements: Legal right to live and work in Tanzania. Fluent in spoken and written English and Swahili

BBC Media Action (BBCMA) in Tanzania is delivering a Responsible Parenting and Family Care project (RPFC) funded by UNICEF. The project aims to influence parents and primary caregivers to adopt responsible parenting practices, from pregnancy and birth up to 18 years. To achieve this, the project produces national and local radio programmes called Safari ya Malezi (Parenting Journey). The programmes central message for parents and caregivers is to ‘Care, Protect and Communicate’ with cross-cutting themes of ‘Family Development’ and ‘Love’.
The project focuses on achieving three major social and behavioural outcomes:
• Fathers engage more in responsible parenting
• Parents and caregivers communicate effectively with children
• Parents and caregivers prevent violence against children
Job purpose:
We are looking for a Mentor/Producer-Presenter to deliver in-depth training and mentoring on radio production to staff at a number of our partner stations throughout the country. The training and ongoing support aims to build their capacity, to produce varied, high-quality and editorially robust radio programmes.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Senior Trainer Mentor and Partnerships Development Manager to develop training plans that meet the needs of radio producers in line with a range of project objectives. The Mentor/Producer-Presenter will deliver training on location at the partner stations’ studios and during centrally organised training events. S/he will also provide communications and media training, as required. S/he will also co-present a national RPFC programme with a male presenter. The Mentor/Producer-Presenter will provide ongoing support to our partner organisations and their staff, with the goal of improving the quality and capacity of the media sector in Tanzania and fostering stronger links between NGOs and the media.

The Niambie project provides a unique space in the national media for young people to discuss important issues on their own terms and in their own language. It engages and informs young people from across Tanzania, creating a platform for them to talk to their leaders. Evidence shows that Niambie contributes to increased self-efficacy among young people and women and increased ability to engage in discussions and take action on issues that matter to them.

S/he will work directly with local radio stations and support local trainer/mentors to deliver training and mentoring sessions. - Develop and deliver the partner training and capacity-building elements of BBC Media Action’s Responsible Parenting and Family care project; to reach the highest standards in terms of quality, effectiveness, impact and relevance - meeting objectives clearly defined in the project proposal
- Work with the Senior Trainer Mentor and Partnerships Development Manager to design a formal and on the job production training guide and train partner radios so that they independently produce a weekly local programme which meets BBC editorial standards.
- Deliver a series of training workshops and events as per project’s approved work plan
- Deliver one-to-one and online mentoring to producers and journalists at assigned partner radio stations or organisations. The Trainer/Mentor will provide constructive feedback at the end of each assignment
- Work closely with radio partner producers on all aspects of training and programme production to ensure maximum ownership of the local programme
- Work with RPFC mentor to ensure a national programme is produced weekly and on time. This may include arranging and conducting interviews, assigning production work to selected partner stations, , presentation and editing of materials for the programme when needed
- Ensure that findings from research and audience feedback are used to refine and improve projects outputs
- Submit weekly reports and work plans
- Support all trainers coming to train our partner organisations
- Ensure all project activities meet BBC standards, as well as delivering the projects development objectives
- Provide technical links s between NGO experts and local radio partners in development of radio products and manage relationships between both
- Generate new project ideas and report up to management level

Required skills, knowledge and experience:
- Strong editorial judgment and substantial radio production experience within Tanzania is essential (3 years minimum with a reputable organisation)
- Degree or diploma in journalism, mass communication or related field
- Fluent in English and Swahili with ability to write reports and scripts in these languages
- Experience in training journalists is an added advantage
- Excellent interpersonal skills, communication and influencing skills

- Identify the training needs of all partners of the Niambie II project, in order to facilitate the design of suitable training packages for implementation by the trainer/mentors
- Oversee the delivery of training packages, ensuring impact is maximised
- Conduct timely spot-checks and analyse local programmes in order to provide feedback to the projects, production and research teams
- Ensure that all programming and training meet the highest BBC standards, as well as delivering the project’s development objectives
- Ensure that findings from research and audience feedback are used to refine and improve project outputs
- Manage the logistics of all international trainers’ visits for project support
- Maintain and manage relationships with partner station management, teams and YP’s
- Support trainer/mentors to establish online, mobile and social media aspects of the project
