LOCATION: Johannesburg, South Africa (preferable) or Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Overview
Ubongo Learning is Africa's leading producer of kids' edutainment. As a non-profit social enterprise, we create fun, localised and multi-platform educational content that helps kids learn, and leverage their learning to change their lives. Ubongo reaches millions of families across Africa through accessible technologies like TV, radio and mobile phones. Our show’s ​Ubongo Kids and ​Akili and Me currently air in 31 countries across Africa, in Swahili, English, French, and Kinyarwanda. We are currently adapting the shows to even more languages including Kikuyu, Luo, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and Twi. We are looking for an experienced graphics designer with excellent video production and editing skills to join our multi-country Business Team. You will ​work collaboratively with our teams in Tanzania, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and the US to create content pieces that help build awareness and generate demand for Ubongo’s products and services across Africa and globally. The ideal candidate must be an excellent visual storyteller with the ability to embody our brand’s mission and vision, and tell our story to multiple audiences in captivating ways. 

You must be willing to be challenged, think critically and creatively about the role that visual storytelling can have in Ubongo’s journey to sustainability and continued expansion across the African continent and globally. Note: This is a full-time position, and we are looking for someone to join our offices in Tanzania or South Africa, however, we would prefer someone based in Johannesburg.
You are a good candidate if you have:
  • Broad knowledge of design principles and ​experience as a graphic designer with evidence of work.
  • Excellent photography, video producing and editing skills, with the ability to take great raw footage of children and families in accordance with our brand.
  • Ability to design, storyboard and animate videos isn’t a requirement but definitely a BONUS.
  • Great time management and are a skilled task juggler. There is a LOT going on at Ubongo, and your job is to keep up with the demands!
  • Great written and oral communication skills in English and preferably one other African language.
  • Tech-savvy and able to quickly figure out new software and systems. We use a huge range of different cloud-based programs to collaborate and streamline our work, including Slack, G Suite, Creative Cloud, Asana and others.
  • Good listening skills and can deal with ambiguity and are able to figure things out for yourself.
  • The ability to work independently and to think on your feet.
  • Experience creating content for a non-profit company and/or social cause is a plus!
  • A love for kids! ​They’re why we do what we do. Our kids’ music and videos will become part of your life (and constantly stuck in your head).
  • Persistence​! We have a big goal and have to get things done with limited resources.
  • Courage, and are willing to speak up for what’s right, when you see wrong, or when you think there might be a better way.
  • ‘UTU’ (a Swahili word for humanity). This implies that you are honest, trustworthy, transparent and conscientious.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serve as a strategic and creative design partner and ​communicate Ubongo’s story to different audiences including development partners, corporates, funders, educators, children, and caregivers.
  • Support the Business team with creative video and design solutions for digital channels, ​campaigns, events, presentations, product launches, partner stories ​, and market positioning initiatives.
  • Work directly with Marketing Manager to develop visual concepts
  • Create graphics and videos with brand consistency
  • Work together with the Business and Research teams to design and run user testing workshops for content pieces.
  • Create and populate a database of photos and video reels of happy children and families in different contexts
  • Stay up to date with video marketing trends, especially on key social platforms like Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in design or a related field
  • Experience with After Effects, Premiere, and Photoshop

  • Experience with motion design and animation (not required but preferred)
