Background
The
UNV Field Unit (FU) is responsible for mobilization, recruitment and
placement of UN Volunteers in UN Agencies, Government, Civil Society
Organizations and the Private Sector. The UNV Field Unit represents and
positions the UNV Programme in-country and brings UNV’s services and
volunteer solutions closer to cooperating partners. The UNV FU is
further responsible for every day management of serving volunteers.
The
Communications Intern will support the UNV Head of Field Unit in
Communications and Advocacy initiatives for the UNV programme in
Tanzania. He/She will receive support and guidance from the UNV Communications Associate based in the UNV Regional Office in Nairobi.
The
Intern will be expected to support with the outreach, advocacy and
Communications by demonstrating a forward-thinking approach to match the
current communication trends including social media engagement.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under
the supervision of the Head of Field Unit and support from the
Communication Associate, UNV ESARO in Nairobi, the intern shall work
and/or assist the UNV Field Unit to perform, inter alia, the following tasks: -
Engage
with the UNV Regional Office team in strategic communications planning
and processes that support the organization’s mission, strengthen the
visibility of the Field Units activities and raise public awareness on
volunteer mobilization;
In collaboration with the UNVFU team, design and produce relevant knowledge management products and communication packages;
Engage
with the UNV FU team in writing and disseminating of external-oriented
content for the UNV website, social media, newsletters, and other
outreach mediums, in line with corporate guidelines;
Review
and edit success stories, blogs, etc. from field unit’s serving
volunteers and, in line with corporate guidelines, ensuring they
demonstrate UNV’s added value and thought leadership, and are ready for
publishing and dissemination;
Monitor
and improve communication tools (including communications products and
online channels) to ensure clear communication of results and UNV
positions on key issues to advance the development agenda;
Assist the FU in the organization of key events and communication opportunities
Promote key events and results of the Field Units and the UNV Regional Office within the Region;
Identify
sources of information related to volunteerism and development from
countries in the region and facilitate sharing and replication of
practices and lessons learned;
Assist in development of a Volunteers database and mailing lists and ensure they are maintained up to date;
Participate in meetings and perform other communications/advocacy support tasks as required.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
UNDP may accept interns providing the following conditions are met:
Be enrolled in a relevant graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) or;
Be enrolled in a relevant final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);
Have graduated with a university degree as defined below and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation
Field of study related to communications, journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, and/or related fields.
Knowledge in production of advocacy material will be an advantage

Skills:
UN or UNDP experience or know-how beneficial;
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in communications, media relations and/or advocacy campaigns, using traditional and social media;
Work experience considered as an asset.
Sound computer skills and experience using the Internet and web-based applications and content management systems.
Language
Fluency in English - written and spoken is required
Conditions:
Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP.
All costs connected with an intern's participation in the Programme must be borne by:
The nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students;
The student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for travel (including to and from the office), accommodation, etc.
The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan.
Costs incurred by an intern in the discharge of his/her functions shall be reimbursed by UNDP under the same rules as costs reimbursed to staff members. Costs incurred by an intern undertaking official travel at the request of UNDP in the discharge of functions related to the internship activities shall be paid by the Organization on the same basis as costs incurred by staff members, including payment of DSA, as applicable.
