As a natural resource use company, GRAS must manage and monitor its environmental impacts, and seeks to achieve net benefit impacts. Due to the potential impacts that the company has (both positive and negative) on local communities and the natural environment, sustainability is a leading priority for the company and its investors. The company is certified under a number of national and international environmental and social certification schemes, and the company also conducts internal audits and monitoring.

About the Position:
The Acting Environmental and Social Governance (A-ESG) Director will be filling in for the ESG Director when on Maternity leave. The role is responsible for managing and overseeing the Environmental and Social Governance in all operations across the organisation.

They are responsible for working with and managing local teams to ensure that the company maintains its Environmental and Social Certification (such as ISO and FSC), as well as adhering to Health and Safety standards and requirements. In addition, the A-ESG Director will be responsible for overseeing all stakeholder relations, monitoring and responding to media articles, writing articles on the company’s operations for dissemination, and producing the organisation’s environmental and social reports. The person taking on this role will also be responsible for overseeing and seeking sales opportunities for the company’s carbon projects.

The person who takes on this role will be expected to keep in touch with the ESG Director during the contract period to keep them up to date with the activities.
The position will be predominantly based in Tanzania, however there will be a significant level of travel to GRAS’ operations in Mozambique, Uganda and Tanzania.

Key Responsibilities
• Review, update, manage and implement the corporate Environmental and Social Development Plan and IFC performance standards and provide reports as required by the Board and Lenders.
• Review, update, manage and implement the corporate Environmental and Social Management System for the organisation.
• Oversee the implementation of Environmental and Social obligations and standards, the ESAP, EHS and IFC performance standards and provide reports as required by the Board, Lenders and other obligations
• Work closely with the COO to manage and oversee all matters relating to Health and Safety Management across all operations
• Ensure there is continuous reporting of incidents, which are reported as required within the organization, and on a monthly basis within the management team, and in the Group Monthly Report
• Maintain (and achieve) ISO 9001, 14001 and 18001 in the relevant operations
• Ensure implementation of the community development programs
• Maintain and where relevant expand FSC certification for the company’s forestry plantations
• Obtain carbon project validation and verification and support the sale of carbon credits

About the candidate
The work will require close co-operation with several other members of the GRAS team. At Green Resources, all staff, including contractors, must take a practical approach to their work and must be ready to hit the ground running. They need exceptional communication skills, and to be able to engage effectively with others. They must be an effective manager and a good team-player.

The successful candidate must have good project management skills. They must be willing to roll their sleeves up, get their hands dirty and where necessary get involved directly with the teams to ensure delivery of the company’s E&S goals. The individual must have direct experience in reporting on projects and producing material to demonstrate the value of the projects to investors and other stakeholders.

The individual must be highly productive and motivated. Evidence of effective time management is required, as the successful candidate will often be working on multiple tasks with different departments. They must have a passion for environmental and social responsibility, conservation and social development. The right candidate for this position will be hardworking and driven, and willing to go the extra mile.

Requirements of the candidate:
Essential:

• Advanced Degree in sustainability, environmental and social management, or other relevant disciplines
• Experience in working with local communities, and implementing community development and engagement projects
• Strong understanding of effective Health and Safety practices and management systems
• Experience in developing, and implementing environmental management programs
• Experience managing large budgets
• Demonstrable project management skills
• Knowledge of international certification schemes such as FSC and ISO
• Strong communications skills, both written and verbal
• Experience in analysing databases, and producing reports for various audiences
• Experience in producing communications material
• Good knowledge of computer systems (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
• Willingness to work in both a field and office setting, with travel to various locations
• A strong team player, willing to work in a dynamic and adaptive environment

Experience in conducting audits under FSC/ISO would be preferable, as well as the ability to speak either Portuguese, Swahili or Luganda.
