Legal Officer – Railway Children Africa Job Description
Provide legal representation to street connected children and youth in contact and in conflict with the law. Actively network with the police, Social Welfare Officers (SWO’s), Local Government Authority (LGA), service providers, CSOs and partners to promote a coordinated response to protect children and youth living and working on the streets.
Actively work with Tanganyika Law Society and pro-bono lawyers appointed under the Access to Justice Programme to provide Children Living and Working on the Street(CLWS) with legal representation and support.

Assist relevant staff in establishing community care projects along the main bus stands, by engaging with targeted stakeholders to be Champions for Children and Youth Living and working on the streets.
Facilitate and Support the formation of street Connected Youth Forums at the district level.
– Establish and maintain strong working partnerships with social welfare department, police, police gender and child desk and other relevant government offices in support of children and youth living and working on the streets, particularly in regard to access to justice.
– Create awareness among child protection actors such as Police, Courts, LGA, Remand homes and SWO’s on the Law of the Child Act, 2009 and the Child Protection Guidelines especially as pertains to responding to reports of abuse against children.
– Actively participate in district networks including child protection forums, among others to promote and advocate on issues related to children living and working on the streets.Identify and advise on specific networking opportunities and build relationships for referrals to service providers within the districts for children and youth living and working on the streets.
– Support advocacy related work at Local and National level to amend laws and policies that violate the rights of children and youth on the streets.
– Engage with staff across all CLWS programme areas to understand the challenges within their work and help identify areas that require advocacy work at various levels to help address those challenges.
– To assist in the preparation and logistics arrangements during different meetings.
– Assist in ensuring proper record keeping on the implementation of the street children activities pertaining to access to justice.
– Assist in generating legal literacy and legal awareness materials for our beneficiary group.
– Undertake research aimed at promoting the implementation of child rights and ensuring that as Legal Officer you remain up to speed on all legal developments in regard to children and youth
Education:
Holder of a Degree in Law (LLB) from a recognized higher learning institution and attended law school of Tanzania,
Be an advocate, registered with the Tanganyika Law Society with at least two years post qualification experience
Experience and Skills:
· The ideal candidate will have at least 2 year’s post-qualification professional experience including litigation, preferably with child litigants.
· Some work experience supporting technical or programmatic activities with orphans and vulnerable children
· Experience with advocating for marginalized groups rights
