  • Goal 2: Women’s Empowerment -Women are politically, economically and socially empowered to be transformative leaders and change agents within their households and communities.
  • Goal 3: Tackling Rural Poverty - Oxfam in Tanzania Country Strategy 2015-2019 works towards rural women having access and control of economic resources, including land, and influence over markets and investments to ensure sustainable food security and resilience to disasters, especially those induced by climate change.
  • Goal 4: Focuses on Oxfam’s capacity and partners to manage humanitarian response and preparedness. Building resilience to climate change and adaptation.
The approach to implementation will be primarily working with partners and allies. Oxfam in Tanzania operates out of three office base(s) (Mwanza; Arusha and Dar es Salaam). The Burundian Refugee response also necessitated opening of the field offices in Kibondo.
To achieve this, OXFAM in Tanzania seeks to recruit suitable qualified Candidate to fill in the following position; Gender and Protection Assistant. 

Job Purpose
To ensure that gender and women’s rights are at the heart of Oxfam in Burundi Refugees Response (BRR) and host community program work in the field. The role supports the   identification and integration of the gender and protection elements in the humanitarian program; enhancing protection and gender mainstreaming as well as strengthening community structures to prevent and address protection issues 

Roles & Responsibilities
  1. Support and participate in assessments including protection analysis, Age, Gender and Diversity Mainstreaming (AGDM)
  2. Support volunteers to ensure that they submit weekly reports for consolidation and sharing.
  3. Mobilise refugees and host community to participate actively in program activities including events and functions.
  4. Participate in trainings tailored towards enhancing capacity of Oxfam staff, partners and community-based structures especially around safe programming and protection mainstreaming.
  5. Build the capacity of volunteers on the facilitation skills, record keeping and report writing.
  6. Support in writing stories related to program development as they relate to gender and protection issues.
  7. Prepare own and volunteer weekly/monthly work plans and provide updates on weekly and monthly basis to inform program activities.
  8. Ensure proper documentation on community led initiatives (meetings, dialogues) ,referrals and meaningful participation of women and men in leadership and program activities.
  9. Perform any other work related to outputs which might be assigned or delegated by the manager

Skills & Competencies
  • To have a minimum of a Diploma in Development Studies, Social Sciences, Social Work or relevant field,
  • To have at least one-year work experience in a Non-Government environment,  experience in implementing programs for vulnerable groups & women in emergency responses is an advantage.
  • Good understanding of the camp and host community context and sufficient field experience in similar environment
  •  Ability to consolidate reports from volunteers and share with manager  with minimal supervision
  • A good understanding of and ability to identify and analyse protection and gender issues with previous exposure to gender & protection risk analysis to inform  program team/activities
  • Good communication skills with the ability to interact with a wide range of people,  able to communicate in oral & write Kiswahili and English, working knowledge of local languages of the refugees (Kirundi) is an advantage.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to be flexible in work tasks
  • Sensitivity to the needs and priorities of disadvantaged and other vulnerable groups.
  • Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills, willing to support and learn
  • Well organised, with good attention to detail and developed ability to prioritise tasks to meet tight deadlines and organise work in a complex setting
  • Sympathy to Oxfam values, to be familiar with and abide by the NGO/Red Cross, Code of Conduct, the People in Aid Code, Oxfam International desire.
