The Marketing & Promotional Materials Expert Volunteer will help to equip Business Development Service providers (BDSPs) in Iringa and Morogoro with the skills and tools to market and promote their businesses. Marketing and promotional skills and tools will assist BDSPs to sell their existing services to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and is another training service opportunity to grow their business and income.
Background
The Tanzania Enabling Growth through Investment and Enterprise Program (ENGINE) is a four-year, USAID-funded Feed the Future activity awarded through the Volunteers for Economic Growth Alliance (VEGA), that aims to streamline and enhance many of the regulatory, informational and financial channels that encourage domestic and foreign investment in the southern mainland agricultural regions of Mbeya, Morogoro, and Iringa, and in Zanzibar.
ENGINE works at the district level, using a broad-based approach to engage with district Local Government Authorities (LGAs), private sector associations, business development service providers, financial institutions (FIs) and small and medium enterprises. The program's activities are divided into three main component:
Implement policies for growth. Build the capacity of the private sector to effectively dialogue with the government to set the policy agenda and improve the capacity of the public sector to implement policies.
Equip businesses for growth. Strengthen SME capacity and foster the growth and capacity of a sustainable market for business development services (BDS) in Tanzania.
Access to finance for growth. Broaden access to finance for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), especially women and youth entrepreneurs and those working within agricultural value chains, to facilitate increased investment and growth.
Assignment Tasks
The Expert Volunteer will complete the following tasks
A. Attend an orientation meeting with ENGINE Program staff in Dar es Salaam;
B. Facilitate focus group discussions for BDPSs and SMEs to gauge their need for marketing and promotional materials, assisted by the BDS Coordinator in each region.
C. Accompanied by relevant ENGINE staff, facilitate group trainings for BDSPs in Morogoro, Iringa, Mbeya and Zanzibar in which the following topics are covered:
a. Tools for marketing and promotion relevant to BDSPs;
b. Online marketing skills;
c. Skills in tracking online marketing visibility/viewers/ and responding;
d. Customized promotions and outreach;
e. Creative promotional efforts – trying new things, testing outcomes, iterating;
f. Select at least 10 BDSPS and work with them to develop sample marketing and promotional materials,
g. Propose additional Technical Assistance necessary to enhance the BDSPS marketing and promotional skills.
D. Write a Final Report summarizing the findings, conclusions and recommendations related to the assignment, as well as a discussion with program staff on challenges and recommended solutions;
E. Provide exit debriefings to program staff that include an overview of the assignment's challenges and proposed solutions.
Qualifications
Flexible, independent, self-directed, and motivated
Demonstrated skills and ability required to successfully perform the work assignment
Senior level (5-10 year minimum) business or technical expertise experience
Suitability/medical clearance for traveling and working in an international, developing cross-cultural environment
Bachelor degree in business, related field or comparable senior level experience
Previous international travel experience in a developing country is an asset
Ability to speak the local language is an asset
