For more than 30 years, Médecins du Monde, a campaigning medical organization committed to international solidarity, has been caring for the most vulnerable populations at home and abroad. It has continued to highlight obstacles that exist in accessing health care and has secured sustainable improvements in health-for-all policies.
Those working for this independent organization do not solely dispense care and treatment but condemn violations of human dignity and rights and fight to improve matters for populations living in precarious situations. MdM currently works in 40 countries across all continents where it focuses on 4 priority areas: caring for the health of migrants and displaced persons, promoting sexual and reproductive health, combating HIV and reducing the harm and risks associated with drug use, crises and conflicts.
MdM is present in Tanzania since 1992 contributing to the needs of the community in health care services and fighting HIV epidemic.
MdM has launched a harm reduction project in Dar es Salaam in 2010 which focuses on empowering the capacity of local organizations, health sectors and self-support groups.
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The overall objective of the position of Social Worker Mentor (SWM) is to support the implementation of Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT) and enhance the capacity and skills of the field team of local NGO implementing harm reduction program in improving social well being of people who use drugs and linkage to available social support services. The SWM acts as a coach and mentor to his/her counterparts of the implementing partners and spends 80% of her/his time at the demonstration site level.
• The SWM provides support to her/his counterpart and field team of the local NGOs in identifying specific (social) needs of people who use drugs both in community site and in outreach.
• Provide mentorship and technical assistance to conduct interviews with beneficiaries and their families to assess their situation and offering support to them.
• Provide coaching and mentorship in counselling, advise & support beneficiaries in social issues (notably child care and gender or domestic violence)
• Provide support in Liaising with social welfare department under Municipal/organization for marginalised populations to be able to access to social welfare services
• Provide support to local NGO and facilitate to establish formal linkage with MAT clinic with the support of Program Support Manager.
• Build capacity of field team such as outreach workers and peer educators of the local NGO to generate demand for MAT among PWUD, assessing eligibility criteria through training and coaching.
• Provide technical assistance to her/his counterpart to establish and implementation of robust follow up mechanism for MAT beneficiaries in coordination with MAT clinic
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE NEEDED
-A degree/ diploma in social work
-A minimum of 2 years’ experience in social work with marginalised populations.
-Experience in working in harm reduction program for people who use drugs is an asset.
-Strong communication and interpersonal skills
-Must demonstrate flexibility to adapt to changing requirements.
-Ability to work with minimum supervision and handle pressure
-Able to cope with traumatic situations related to drug use and other risk behaviours
-Problem solving and Analytical skills
-Team spirit and strong motivation skills
-Ability to supervise, mentor and monitor the activities
Personal skills required:
-Excellent communication and analytical skills.
-Strong problem solving and organizational skills
-Strong facilitation skills.
-Ability to work in the natural environment of (injecting) drug users and within services for (injecting) drug users
-Ability to handle multiple tasks; proven self-initiative and problem solving abilities.
-Proven track record of quality performance in highly pressured environments.
